PTSD: When the Dust Settles

When the Dust Settles

PTSD is real. Trauma is real. And the pain it leaves behind can reach places words can hardly explain. In a world where these words are sometimes used so casually, we must never forget that behind them can be a very real, very wounded soul.

For me, healing began when I stopped thinking I could cast out every debilitating thought, every nightmare and somehow take authority over what was so deeply painful.  I realized I was denying the scars that were left behind.  I had to acknowledge it, grieve it, and finally say, “Yes, this happened to me—but it does not define me.” It was something I walked through, not who I am.

Sometimes life feels as though a bomb has gone off. You stand there as the dust settles—bewildered, broken, wondering where to put your feet next. And for some of us, it is there, in that place that we realize the only thing we can do is reach for Jesus.  In the rubble, in the dust He stands open arms waiting for our gaze.

I learned that healing wasn't found in pretending the heaviness wasn't there. It was found in giving it to Him. Casting every care upon the Lord and trusting that He could carry what I could no longer gut it out, trying to carry it myself.  We are not designed for that.  He is.

Some things we walk through leave scars. Physical scars. Emotional scars. Relational scars. Scars on the mind. And sometimes, scars deep within the soul.

But Jesus does something beautiful with scars.

He doesn't shame us for having them. He doesn't ask us to erase them or pretend they never happened. He meets us there. He softens what once felt unbearable. He teaches us how to walk again—even if we walk with a limp.

And maybe that limp will always be part of my story.

But so will His presence.

Because when I look back now, I don't only see what happened to me. I see the places where Jesus carried me. I see His faithfulness in the rubble. I see grace where I thought there was only loss.

The scar may be part of my story and yours, but Jesus is the One who gives it meaning. And sometimes, the very place where we were wounded becomes the place where His beauty shines through.
